The Kansas Biological Survey was established at KU in 1911 and has a legislative mandate to study the plants and animals of economic and educational importance in Kansas. With more than 50 researchers dedicated to understanding human impacts on the ecology of terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems, this KU designated research center was renamed in 2021—as the Kansas Biological Survey & Center for Ecological Research—to bring greater visibility to the depth and strength of ecological research at KU. The research center also manages the KU Field Station, which consists of more than 3,700 acres of land and aquatic habitats to conduct ecological research, as well as a network of nature trails for the community to enjoy.
