Our Jayhawk journalism and mass communications alumni have been at the forefront of media innovation for more than 100 years, and now more than ever, it is so important to educate ethical and enlightened media, marketing and communications professionals. Several of our generous donors have set up matching challenges today, which would add up to more than $100,000 to support the next generation of KU J-School students. Thank you for your support during One Day. One KU.
Scholarship Fund Challenge: 1978 alumni Liz Leech and Steve Frazier will donate $25,000 after the first 30 donations to the general scholarship fund are received. For many students, whether they are able to attend KU hinges on scholarships and financial aid. Generous alumni, some of whom were the recipients of scholarships during their time in the J-School, continue to pay that gift forward by donating to the general scholarship fund to assist current and future generations of Jayhawk journalists.
Tom Hansen Scholarship for Influential Writing Challenge: This new scholarship honors 1978 alumnus Tom Hansen and supports students who focus on writing and editing. Tom’s family will donate $25,000 after the first $5,000 in donations are received toward the scholarship. Tom’s larger-than-life personality and his nationally respected skills in the field of strategic marketing left behind a trail of friends and family who are better for having had his light shine on them.
The Rick Musser Multimedia Scholarship Match Challenge: An anonymous donor will match the first $2,500 in donations to the Rick Musser Multimedia Scholarship, which was established by friends and colleagues of Professor Emeritus Rick Musser. The scholarship supports students studying multimedia.
The Tom & Jeannie Eblen “In Honor of the Glorious Red Pen Scholarship” Match Challenge: An anonymous donor will match $2,500 to this scholarship, which honors the late Tom and Jeannie Eblen. Professor Eblen was a University Daily Kansan general manager and news adviser. He and Jeannie opened their hearts and their home to generations of J-School students. The scholarship provides support to students studying news and information.
Dean’s Match for Journalism: Dean Ann Brill will match the first $2,000 received for the dean’s unrestricted fund. This fund provides vital support toward the school’s greatest need.
The Mike Vrabac University Daily Kansan Match Challenge: KU J-School alumnus and lecturer Mike Vrabac will match the first $1,000 in donations to the NOW Fund, which supports the University Daily Kansan and its student staff.
Support the Eudora Times Match Challenge: An anonymous donor will provide a dollar-for-dollar match up to the first $5,000 donated to the Eudora Times. The small town of Eudora lost its local paper several years ago, but thanks to the efforts of J-School Professor Teri Finneman and Jayhawk student journalists, a window into community news has been created through the Eudora Times news site. Students cover the school district, businesses, churches, city government and local news for the citizens of Eudora. Please help ensure this groundbreaking project continues.
