Our Jayhawk journalism and mass communications alumni have been at the forefront of media innovation for more than 100 years, and now more than ever, it is important to educate ethical and enlightened media, marketing and communications professionals. Please join our challenge donors in supporting the next generation of KU J-School students during One Day. One KU.
Native American Journalism Fund: KU alumni Tracey Campbell will match $10,000 in donations for the new Native American Journalism Fund. This fund supports Native American-focused programs and initiatives at the school, such as the J-School's Native Storytelling High School Workshop. It brings Native American students from across the country to campus to explore journalism and learn about possible majors and the admissions process at KU and Haskell Indian Nations University. The workshop’s purpose is to educate the next generation of Native storytellers by providing them with the tools and skills necessary to tell stories that matter to them and their communities.
Sam Adams Emerging Voices in Journalism Fund: Late J-School professor Sam Adams was a pioneer among Black journalists in the United States. An award-winning journalist, educator, civil rights activist and friend of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Adams was a founder of the Ida B. Wells Award by the National Association of Black Journalists and also was known for his Highways to Hope coverage. Sam’s daughter Carol has pledged a $4,000 match for this support fund that will help marginalized students to achieve their full potential.
Bill Snead Memorial Fund in Photojournalism: Bill Snead’s 50+ year career in photojournalism began at the Lawrence Journal-World, and he went on to an award-winning career with The Washington Post, National Geographic and United Press International. In November, Snead was part of the inaugural class inducted into the Kansas Press Association’s Kansas Photojournalism Hall of Fame. After his death in 2016, friends, family and colleagues created this memorial fund to support photojournalism students and projects at the J-School. An anonymous donor will match up to $2,500 for all gifts to this fund.
Frazier-Leech Scholarship Challenge: For many students, whether they can attend KU hinges on scholarships and financial aid. Generous alumni, some of whom were recipients of scholarships during their time in the J-School, continue to pay that gift forward by donating to the general scholarship fund. 1978 alumni Liz Leech and Steve Frazier will donate $10,000 after 30 gifts to this fund to assist current and future generations of Jayhawk journalists.
Support the Eudora Times Match Challenge: An anonymous donor will match the first $5,000 donated to the Eudora Times. The small town of Eudora lost its local paper several years ago, but thanks to the efforts of J-School Professor Teri Finneman, Jayhawk student journalists now provide vital local news by covering the school district, businesses, churches and city government.
Dean’s Match for Journalism: Dean Ann Brill will match the first $2,000 received for the dean’s unrestricted fund, which provides vital support toward the school’s greatest needs.
Rick Musser Multimedia Scholarship Match Challenge: An anonymous donor will match the first $2,500 in donations to this scholarship that supports students studying multimedia journalism. Friends and colleagues of Professor Emeritus Rick Musser established this scholarship.
